Chicago pizza

Deep dish is the famous one, but plenty of Chicagoans eat tavern-style most weeks: a cracker-thin crust cut into squares. The newer places do Neapolitan, coal-fired and Detroit-style.

9 of the 20

  1. Pequod's Pizza

    Lincoln Parkdeep-dish pizza$$

Pan pizza ringed with cheese baked dark and crunchy against the pan, the edge regulars fight over. It's a sports bar on Clybourn, a long-standing favorite of the city's chefs, and the kitchen runs until 2 a.m. most nights (midnight on Sunday).

  2. Vito & Nick's Pizzeria

    Ashburntavern-style pizza$

A South Side tavern cutting cracker-thin pizza into squares since the 1950s; the house sausage is the topping to get, with a cold beer. Cash only.

  3. Spacca Napoli

    RavenswoodNeapolitan pizza$$

Jonathan Goldsmith's Neapolitan pies, baked fast in a wood oven assembled by builders from Naples, on a quiet Ravenswood block. The city's chefs and restaurateurs voted it Chicago's best pizza at the 2025 Jean Banchet Awards.

  4. Coalfire

    West Towncoal-oven pizza$$

Thin, blistered pies from an oven fueled by coal, in an 1876 West Town building; the one everyone photographs is pepperoni dotted with whipped ricotta. The Southport location adds lunch Wednesday to Sunday.

  5. Paulie Gee's Logan Square

    Logan Squarewood-fired pizza$$

Derrick Tung's Chicago branch of the Brooklyn pizzeria: wood-fired pies like the hot-honey Hellboy, lots of vegan options, and Detroit-style 'Logan Squares' from the recipe that won him the 2018 U.S. Pizza Cup. Tuesday and Wednesday, 5 to 7, margheritas drop to $10; Thursday is trivia night.

  6. Milly's Pizza in the Pan

    Noble Squaredeep-dish pizza$$$

Robert Maleski's caramelized-crust pan pizzas, baked in limited numbers each day; order ahead, because they sell out. A West Town counter, with a second shop in Lakeview.

  7. The Art of Pizza

    Lakeviewdeep-dish pizza$$

A Lakeview counter known for stuffed pizza sold by the slice, plus thin and pan pies and daily pasta specials. Art's Special (sausage, onions, mushrooms, green peppers) is the order. Open daily until 11, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

  8. Bartoli's Pizzeria

    Roscoe Villagestuffed pizza$$

Brian Tondryk, grandson of a Gino's East founder, makes stuffed and tavern-thin pies in a brick-walled Roscoe Village room; the Tribune once named it the city's best.

  9. Pizz'Amici

    West Towntavern-style pizza$$

Tavern-style pies on crackery, paper-thin crust in West Town, begun as free pizzas posted on Instagram before opening on Grand in 2024; stick to three toppings. BYOB. Try the house-made Italian beef on top.
