Twenty Mexican spots, from carnitas counters in Pilsen to a tasting menu in Uptown.

Updated · 3 min read

Where to go

Pilsen and Little Village, along 18th and 26th Streets, have the taquerias and carnitas counters. For regional cooking, head to Logan Square or Archer Heights; for a big night, Uptown.

6 of the 25

  1. Cariño

    Uptown$$$$

Norman Fenton's intimate, Michelin-starred Uptown room: a Latin American tasting menu, plus a late taco omakase at the counter where an oyster arrives dressed like a michelada.

  2. Carnitas Uruapan

    Pilsen$

Michoacán-style carnitas sold by the pound since 1975, with tortillas, salsas and chicharrón. The Pilsen counter opens early, and the best cuts are gone by mid-afternoon.

  3. La Chaparrita

    Little Village$

A taco counter at the front of a Little Village corner grocery, specializing in Mexico City-style fried tacos: suadero, longaniza, tripe. The crispy tripa is a contender for the best taco in the city. Order at the counter and eat standing or take it to go.

  4. Mi Tocaya Antojería

    Logan Square$$$

Diana Dávila's Logan Square restaurant, cooking from her family's travels across Mexico: regional plates you won't find elsewhere in town. The burrito suizo is a Wednesday special. Tuesdays take half off bottles of wine.

  5. Xocome Antojería

    Archer Heights$$

A tiny Archer Heights counter grinding masa for tlacoyos, tamales and moles; a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick. Get a tlacoyo and the birria tacos.

  6. Taquería Chingón

    Fulton Market$$

Al pastor sliced off the trompo plus chef's tacos like duck carnitas, now in Fulton Market after its Bucktown start; Michelin has recognized it. Order at the counter.

The other 19
